A pizza can be elevated from good to great with the right sauce! Sauce is an iconic part of Italian cooking–Italian cuisine has given us Alfredo, Bolognese, Pomodoro, Marinara, and so much more–and we respect that at Salerno’s Pizza. At our Bollingbrook-area location, we offer three unique sauce options on our menu– Red Sauce, BBQ Sauce, and Alfredo Sauce. Read on for some fun facts about each type of sauce, as well as the ingredients that pair best with them!
This is the most iconic type of Italian sauce–to the point that a lot of time, it’s just called “pizza sauce” instead of red sauce. It’s often made using a combination of tomato paste, garlic, onions, Italian seasoning, sugar, salt, pepper, basil, and oregano. Some restaurants add red pepper flakes or cayenne for a little kick. Red sauce is a crowd favorite when it comes to pizza toppings because it goes with just about anything!
Next on our list is BBQ, that legendary tangy sauce that can be found on anything from sandwiches to pizza to burgers. Barbecue sauce tends to pair best with dishes featuring chicken, onions, and ground beef, enhancing the flavors and adding a sweet, zesty kick. Common components of BBQ pizza sauce include brown sugar, lemon, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, honey, ketchup, vinegar, mustard, and paprika. We offer plenty of BBQ dishes for Oak Park-area diners alongside our pizzas, including our BBQ beef sandwich, spicy BBQ ribs, and BBQ half chicken.
Alfredo sauce is a mouthwatering cream-based sauce that is most commonly found in Italian pasta dishes, but can also grace anything from pizzas to sandwiches to chicken dishes. It’s got the shortest ingredient list of these three sauces, often requiring just butter, cheese, garlic, and cream, but is incredibly versatile. Alfredo sauce works best with dishes full of chicken, onion, and garlic, but can also be added to beef-based pizzas for a delicious, unexpected flavor pairing.
